How can we keep children safe in public?
Something as simple as making sure that the kids hold hands, whether it's with an adult or their siblings, will keep them safer in busy areas. Make it the family rule that everyone holds hands with someone when you're out in crowds, like at an amusement park or a busy shopping mall.
How can kids stay away from home?
Tell kids to keep passwords private from everyone but you, their parents. Forbid them from giving out identifying information such as their last name, address, school name or phone number. Make a no-picture rule. Kids should never post or send photos of themselves or their friends.

Use equipment properly — slide feet-first, don't climb outside guardrails, no standing on swings, etc. Always check to make sure no other kids are in the way if they're going to jump off equipment or slide, and land on both feet with their knees slightly bent.

Provide structure and routine. Teens who spend a lot of time unsupervised may be more likely to get into harmful situations. And teens who feel close to their families are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. If possible, set up a time once a week when your family has dinner or does a fun outing together.
