Basic switch configuration

Basic switch configuration can be thought of as the minimum network, port, and security provisioning required for the production deployment of a switch. In practice, your exact needs will vary from environment to environment.

Why do we configure switches?

Switch allows us to set IP address on interface level. IP address assigned on interface is used to manage that particular interface. To manage entire switch we have to assign IP address to VLAN1( Default VLAN of switch). We also have to set default gateway IP address from global configuration mode.

How do I configure ports on a switch?

Switch ports can be manually configured with specific duplex and speed settings. Use the duplex interface configuration mode command to manually specify the duplex mode for a switch port. Use the speed interface configuration mode command to manually specify the speed for a switch port.

What is trunk port in switch?

A trunk port is a type of connection on a switch that is used to connect a guest virtual machine that is VLAN aware. Generally, all frames that flow through this port are VLAN tagged. The exception to this is when a trunk port is granted access to the untagged VLAN set (native VLAN ID).

How is VLAN configured?

Select Switching>VLAN>Basic > VLAN Configuration. ... From the VLAN menu, select the VLAN that you just created. In the IP address field, type the IP address that you want to assign to the VLAN routing interface. In the Subnet Mask field, type the subnet mask that you want to assign to the VLAN routing interface.

Do switches have IP addresses?

But since the switch does not have the capability to assign IP addresses, the computers connected to it will not be able to communicate with each other. They will get an Automatic Private IP Address (APIPA). You need to assign a static IP address to your computers.

Does switch need to be configured?

Most switches used by small businesses and home offices typically require no configuration -- they're "plug and play." However, it's important to remember that plug and play doesn't always work. In addition, these switches certainly don't offer any troubleshooting, logging, security, or manageability.

What is difference between VLAN or inter VLAN routing?

What is Inter-VLAN routing? Virtual LANs ( VLANS ) are networks segments on a switched LAN. Inter-VLAN routing refers to the movement of packets across the network between hosts in different network segments. ... VLANs act as separate subnet on the network.

What is VLAN in CCNA?

VLANs (Virtual LANs) are logical grouping of devices in the same broadcast domain. VLANs are usually configured on switches by placing some interfaces into one broadcast domain and some interfaces into another. Each VLAN acts as a subgroup of the switch ports in an Ethernet LAN.

What is VLAN bridge setup?

The VLAN & Bridge application allows you to configure groups of ports independent of their physical location as a virtual LAN. This arrangement is called a logical grouping the logical group is called a virtual LAN (VLAN). Ports or groups of ports in a VLAN are called VLAN members.

What is VLAN in switch?

Through VLAN switching and routing, a physical network of devices can be segmented into multiple domains. VLAN is short for virtual local area network. It is also called a Virtual LAN. The computers, servers and other devices on a VLAN perform virtually as if on a single LAN, even if they're in separate locations.

How many VLAN can be configured on a single port?

You can have three vlans on one port if the switch configuration allows it. Mine allows one for data and one for VoIP. The quick answer is yes, That's called a trunk.

How assign IP address to VLAN?

In the Mobility Master node hierarchy, navigate to the Configuration > Interfaces > VLANs page. Select a VLAN from the VLANs table, and then select a VLAN ID under Vlan Ids. Under IPv4, select Static from the IP assignment drop-down list. Enter the IPv4 address of the VLAN interface.

What is a Switchport?

Switch ports are Layer 2-only interfaces associated with a physical port. A switch port can be an access port, a trunk port, or a tunnel port. ... Switch ports are used for managing the physical interface and associated Layer 2 protocols and do not handle routing or bridging.

What is the need of VLAN?

A VLAN allows different computers and devices to be connected virtually to each other as if they were in a LAN sharing a single broadcast domain. A VLAN is helpful for organizational use mainly because it can be used to segment a larger network into smaller segments.
